Who it is for

For the leaders building the first group.

Use this resource with pastors, small-group coordinators and core leaders who want to connect group life with discipleship and leadership development. It is a short introduction drawn from a longer work on small groups, rather than a complete training curriculum.

The emphasis is on beginning with your leadership core, learning together and preparing people to carry the ministry into new groups.

Inside the ebook

Five decisions to work through together.

  1. Clarify the culture. Connect your vision and values with the priorities and practices people actually experience.
  2. Agree on a plan. Work with your primary leadership team to build a shared direction for the ministry.
  3. Model the group. Practise the kind of group life you hope others will experience.
  4. Develop leaders who develop others. Give the first group time to form a strong leadership core.
  5. Prepare for multiplication. Support and celebrate leaders as the pilot group makes room for new groups.

Put one idea into practice

Use the ebook for a team conversation.

Read it before your next planning meeting. Ask each leader to bring one example of something your groups do well and one place where a new leader needs more support.

  • Which of our stated values can someone see in a typical group meeting?
  • What does a new group leader need to experience before leading alone?
  • Who could practise a small responsibility with support this month?
  • What would tell us that a group is ready for its next step?

Choose one action, name the person who will lead it and agree when you will review what happened. Let the conversation fit your church’s context and pace.
