Me in the 70's
I was a hippie spiritual seeker in San Francisco, and was saved in the Jesus Movement in 1974. I got involved in ministry early on with Gospel Outreach in Northern California, and then we opened a Christian house ministry in San Francisco in 1977. It was pretty intense.
We did ministry on the streets and at the house 24/7 and soon planted a church, and I became the primary leader. It was definitely crazy at times. At first, I was frustrated and found myself working in reactive mode, putting out fires, and trying to do everything. We did a lot of ministry, but weren’t seeing a lot of fruit that remained.

Then in 1983 I met John Wimber, who was the former head of the Fuller Institute of Church Growth that did a study of over 40,000 churches around the world, and had some eye-opening results. He was leading the Vineyard movement at that time.
John was an amazing evangelist; an accomplished musician (Vineyard music brought a fresh sound to worship around the world); he had a powerful anointing for physical healing and prophetic words; and he was a leader who focused on equipped “regular” people for ministry. The Vineyard was committed to the Word AND the Spirit – both!
I attended his first major conference MC510: Signs, Wonders and Church Growth, and I was hooked…. and that changed the trajectory of my life. It blew my mind. So practical and so powerful! I continued to attend many of the Vineyard conferences and trainings on church leadership and church planting.
My wife and I began to work closely with Wimber, and we planted the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of San Francisco in 1984, applying his principles. We started with my wife and I and two others in our living room, and within months, the church began to grow rapidly.
We expanded to four home groups, and started Sunday services a few months later. San Francisco is a very difficult place to establish a church. If you have ever visited it, you know the parking alone is a nightmare! We moved locations many times. Imagine trying to find parking for 500 or 1000 people… it was extremely challenging.
Me in the 90's
The church became one the largest evangelical churches the City of San Francisco had seen in a generation. By the mid-90s we had over 70 home groups, a healing and counseling center, a ministry to the gay community, a community center that partnered with the City of San Francisco, a ministry to the neo-hippie kids following the Grateful Dead, multiple awesome worship teams, an arts ministry, seven fulltime pastors, and much more.
We planted over a dozen churches in the Bay Area, and had many of our members mobilized for missions and other ministries. It was amazing. We pastored the Vineyard church until 2000.
How did I do it?
I put into practice what I had learned about church planting and leadership, much of it from Wimber and the Vineyard. The study done by the Fuller Institute of Church Growth of 40,000 churches had shown that healthy leaders were the number one factor for churches to grow in quality and quantity…so we focused on developing leaders for small groups and ministries.
I found the SECRET to overcoming my biggest challenges was to be PROACTIVE and INTENTIONAL in developing people.
Once I realized that developing people, and especially developing leaders had to be my main priority, I adjusted my calendar accordingly. I averaged 15-20 personal development meetings a week, and that is not counting staff and team meetings and pastoral care appointment. I’m talking meetings focused on developing the person to be and do all that the Lord has called them to be and do.
I also started tackling the issue of what I call “destiny.” That means one’s calling, purpose or ministry. We like to use the term destiny because it carries so much in it about purpose and God’s direction and more. Everyone needs to learn the basics of the faith, but everyone’s personal calling or destiny is unique – and I wrestled with how to address that without trying to cram everyone into one mold.
As I worked on it, by the late 80s I had developed a 30-page destiny workbook containing a series of assessments based on spiritual gifts, passions, character issues, ministry needs, team and more and I called it the Journey Guide. We used it as a tool to help people discover and begin to fulfill their calling or destiny. It’s essentially a discipleship tool, but it also serves as a leadership development tool. Eventually, in 2004, Glen and I formed a partnership to develop the online version.
We launched the first online version, called the Profiler, in 2011. Ten years later we had added the Mapper and Tracker sections, completing the tool to match the paper version, and we came full circle and called it the Journey Guide. We’ve translated it into Portuguese, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Russian.
We also developed an incredible small group program that incorporates the online tool and has videos and Workbook and Leader Guide. We’ve put the paper version of that program in the book! (DestinyFinder website: https://destinyfinder.com/)
This approach works... It does.
Why? Because it’s Biblical. How do you think the Early Church managed to spread from being an outcast cult in Jerusalem to influencing the entire Roman empire within 30 years? Without much of a New Testament!
And no Internet, printing presses, magazines, phones, newspapers, overhead projectors, computers, social media, copy machines…they didn’t even have church buildings for three hundred years, except the temple in Jerusalem (and that was destroyed in 70 AD).
They were mainly slaves and lower-class people. How did they do it? Mostly by personal relationships, meeting “publically and house to house” meaning large group meetings when they could, and small groups meeting in homes, doing personal discipleship relationally.
They walked in the Spirit. They exercised their spiritual gifts. Miracles, healing, dreams, prophetic experiences were common.
They had the foundation of the small group of apostles that Jesus had developed. And Paul followed the same model, and he developed Timothy and Titus. We’re developing people. And you can do it too.
It develops people for the right reason (their calling), so they WANT to serve from their heart!
Church has turned into a business for so many pastors, and they are burdened primarily with two things: the building and the Sunday service. But neither are the most important factors to produce disciples.
The church needs to be a spiritual FAMILY, with spiritual fathers and mothers developing spiritual sons and daughters into maturity so they in turn have their own spiritual children and they develop them.
And that does NOT happen primarily through Sunday morning. It’s about reproduction and multiplication. And that happens in personal meetings and in the context of serving. Jesus didn’t make disciples in a classroom.
He trained them personally, mostly on-the-job. We need to do the same.
Buildings are called facilities because they facilitate other things. We don’t need buildings for the sake of buildings, unless you’re on a power trip. Buildings can be an enormously helpful asset, but if you have to put too much energy and money into the building it won’t pay off… and it may actually stop you from doing the real ministry.
And of course, we need the power and presence of Holy Spirit to fill and empower us to have a rich relationship with the Lord and to be His witnesses in the earth.
We did a lot of prayer and worship meetings where we would spend hours before the Lord, seeking His face. We experienced a powerful move of the Holy Spirit in the 90s, and for 18 months we met six nights a week to seek the Lord.
It was amazing, and thousands of people visited our church during that time, experiencing healing, refreshing, and a new filling of the Spirit for ministry.
But it’s crucial to understand that Family is the primary model AND the value system that underlies everything we do.
The Church is part army, part hospital, part school, but it’s all family—in which the parents are sacrificing to launch their kids into the world. That’s what we do…we labor to develop people into their calling and launch them.

About the Authors
Michael Brodeur
Michael Brodeur and his wife Diane planted a church in San Francisco in 1984 that became the largest evangelical church the City had seen in a generation.
Michael is the Founder and CEO of Pastor’s Coach, and Co-Founder (with Glen Reed) of Destiny Finder.
Michael was born in San Francisco, raised by counterculture parents, and became a hippie and spiritual seeker as a teenager. He was radically converted to Christ in the 70s while hitch-hiking and living among the Blackfeet Indians in Montana and soon began preaching the gospel on the streets in San Francisco.
He was one of the founders of SOS Ministries in the 70s, an evangelistic ministry that has mobilized over 10,000 believers to witness on the streets of San Francisco, and still sponsors outreaches in the Bay Area to this day. In the early days of his ministry, he was a leader in a Christian house ministry in San Francisco, ministering to street people and drug addicts.
In the 80s he joined in with the Vineyard movement and he and his wife Diane planted a Vineyard church in San Francisco which became the largest evangelical church in San Francisco in a generation, and eventually was overseeing over 20 Vineyard churches throughout Northern California.
Early in his pastoral ministry Michael developed a passion to see believers equipped and released into the specific ministry for which God has designed them. This passion led him to develop materials and a process for leadership development that he used to help hundreds of people to move forward into their destiny and calling. That material, refined by over thirty years of ministry, eventually became the Destiny Finder system. Destiny Finder launched the first destinyfinder.com website in 2010, and over 100,000 people around the world have used its tools to discover and develop their calling.
Michael was awarded a D. Div. from Grace Bible College in Gurgaon, India. He served as Director of the Culture Project for Jesus Culture from 2009-2013. He taught and led the Church Leadership and Church Planting tracks at the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry (BSSM) for over five years in Redding, California. He also worked with Global Legacy, Bethel Church’s association of churches, overseeing churches and creating discipleship programs.
Michael increasingly began working with leaders around the globe and saw more and more need for solid practical biblical and Spirit-led training for churches and especially for pastors and leaders. This led to the development of Pastor’s Coach, which launched its website PastorsCoach.com in 2015.
Michael currently coaches pastors and leaders around the USA and internationally, bringing his passion for mobilizing the church for kingdom ministry to many. He also works with Catch the Fire World, training local Catch the Fire churches around the world. And he is on staff at Jesus Culture Church in Sacramento, developing leadership and discipleship programs.
Michael is one of the foremost strategic thinkers (and doers) of church ministry in the body of Christ today, helping pastors, leaders, churches and movements to move forward into all that God has for them. Glen Reed
Glen Reed started working with Michael Brodeur at the Vineyard Church in 1989, became an Associate Pastor, and in 2004 he co-founded Destiny Finder with Michael.
Most of the teaching in this book comes from the brilliant mind and extensive experience of Michael, but Glen has added his part, having worked with Michael for over 30 years. He developed the book concept, created the structure, and researched and put together all the material in the book. Glen has created the training programs in Pastor’s Coach, he led the design and build efforts to create the Destiny Finder online tools, and he has contributed sections throughout the book.
Glen is the Co-Founder (with Michael Brodeur), and Director of Destiny Finder, and the Director of Pastor’s Coach. Glen became a Christian in 1971 during the Jesus Movement as a freshman at U.C. Davis in California, from which he graduated with a B.S. in Business Management and Agricultural Economics with Highest Honors. He was head of two campus ministries during the 70s, got a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics.
He moved to San Francisco in 1979 and got involved with the Church of the Open Door. He worked in desktop publishing and sales and moved into marketing and technical writing and training in the 90s. Glen served as associate pastor of the Church of the Open Door in San Francisco in 1988.
He started working with Michael at the Vineyard Church in 1989, teaching, pastoring, leading an internship program and helping Michael develop the destiny materials. In 1995 he graduated from Western Seminary with an MDiv. and went on full time staff as an associate pastor at Vineyard Christian Fellowship in San Francisco under Michael.
In 2016 he left the corporate world of technical writing and training, and went full time with Destiny Finder and Pastor’s Coach, doing everything from writing much of the copy on the websites, doing light programming, handling user problems, training pastors and leaders in the Boot Camps, coaching churches, leading webinars, and trying to implement all that apostolically-minded Michael comes up with.
He led Destiny Finder small groups at William Jessup University in Rocklin, Ca; and at Jesus Culture Church in Folsom, CA. He now lives in Santa Ana, CA and in addition to his fulltime responsibilities with Destiny Finder and Pastor’s Coach, he serves in local ministries. He enjoys ballroom dancing (having taught dancing for several years), volleyball, board games, and playing guitar.
